‘Pilgrimages’ is a 2-hour performance project, a journey that starts at the centre of Prague, from National Theatre to Prague Quadrennial 2023 venue, Holešovice Market. This walk is a blessing from the team to all the people who had to move away from where they belong.
A large piece of patchwork quilt “BaakGaaBou” hand sewed by the team is being lifted through the journey.
The meaning of "BaakGaaBou" is small pieces of clothes sewn together into a blanket. In tradition, each piece of clothes made up of the quilt are collected from different families in the village. In Chinese, “百家布” means “The Quilts of the Hundred-Families”.
This blanket is made specially for children, represents "borrowing" luck, health, wealth, fortune from each person, so that the child grows up well.
The clothes of our BaakGaaBou are donated by different people who have to move away from their homeland, Hong Kong to other places and cities, both voluntarily or being forced. Making it represents the blessings, memories and history that are carried with us on our journey.
Like a Greek chorus, on our way we will be singing different melodic fragments from nursery rhymes that represents the memories from homeland.
It is an inviting journey to surrounding passersby, and also a celebration towards an unknown future despite their path and situation of being exiled.
